Dr. Vinay Sharma is a Professor in the Department of Production and Industrial Engineering at Birla Institute of Technology, Mesra, with over 30 years of teaching, research, and administrative experience. He holds a master’s degree from Sambalpur University and earned his Ph.D. in Water Jet Cutting from BIT Mesra. He began his career as a Senior Research Fellow at DRDO, where he received a DRDO Award for his outstanding contributions.
Dr. Sharma has published over 100 research papers in Q1/Q2 Scopus and SCI-indexed journals and conferences. He has supervised more than 25 M. Tech theses and 6 Ph.D. scholars and is a certified Six Sigma Black Belt. His main research areas include advanced manufacturing, micro-forming, electro-discharge machining (EDM), microwave welding, sustainable supply chains, and metal foams. He holds a patent for “Aluminum metal foam and a process for preparation thereof” (Patent No. 338236, 2012).
His current research explores the use of AI/ML models in incremental micro forming, capturing electromagnetic radiation (EMR) during sheet deformation to predict material behavior. His EDM studies focus on microhole generation and tool performance using rapid prototyping. He is also pioneering energy-efficient models in perishable supply chains, integrating Energy Value Stream Mapping (EVSM).
Dr. Sharma has led several funded projects, including a UGC Major Research Project on Microwave Welding, an AICTE-NCP on Metallic Foams, and a DST-FIST II project. He also coordinated a Time and Motion Study for MANREGA wage assessment for the Jharkhand government.
In leadership roles, he served as Dean of Student Welfare, Head of Department, Director of University Polytechnic, and Executive Director of BIT-STEP. At BIT-STEP, he revived the long-inactive society, bringing its operations back after nearly 30 years. As Director of the Polytechnic, he restored government funding, introduced a Hyundai-sponsored laboratory, implemented a NEP-based curriculum, secured NBA accreditation, and upgraded infrastructure.
He significantly improved placements and admissions at BIT Deoghar Campus as Chairman of the respective committees. As the Transport Department Professor In-Charge, he launched driver training programs, emergency maintenance initiatives, and career development plans.
Dr. Sharma is affiliated with several professional bodies, including ASME, Institution of Engineers (India), ISTE, Indian Science Congress, PMAI, and Additive Manufacturing Society of India. He has authored books and chapters and remains an active contributor to manufacturing research and policy implementation.
His commitment to academia, innovation, and institutional development continues to positively impact education, research, and industry collaborations across India.
