Area 1:- Fluid Dynamics

Members: Dr. Jogendra Kumar, Dr. Vikas, Dr. Vinod Kumar Gupta

Flow pattern and stability of a horizontal fluid layer heated from below and cooled from above is known as the Rayleigh-Benard convection. This convection mainly depends on the buoyancy force, caused by the temperature difference across the fluid layers; therefore it is also called the natural convection. The classical Rayleigh- Benard convection and its porous analog have been studied extensively due to its wide range of applications, such as in the prediction of ground water movement in aquifers, in the energy extraction process from geothermal reservoirs, petroleum industry, and underground diffusion of contaminants. Presently, we are working in the area of solutal convection, modulated boundaries, triple diffusion, Nanofluids, instability in cylinders.

Area 2:- MATHEMATICAL MODELLING AND SCIENTIFIC COMPUTING

Members: Prof. Naresh M. Chadha, Dr. Sandeep Sharma, Dr. Fateh Singh

Mathematical modeling of infectious diseases is one of the most important research areas of the current time. An epidemic model enables us to understand and identify the conditions and parameters which are playing pivotal role in disease transmission. In recent past many realistic models pertaining to cancer, dengue, Ebola, SARS, HIV etc. has been formulated and analyzed. These epidemic models may consider a set of ordinary differential equations, partial differential equations, delay differential equations or stochastic differential equations. With the aid of computer algebra and theory of dynamical systems, these models provide key information about the disease dynamics which helps health agencies to reduce the burden of a particular epidemic.

Area 3:- Soft Computing Techniques

Members: Dr. Dheeraj Kumar Joshi, Dr. Alpa Singh Rajput

Fuzzy decision-making environments provide appropriate methods to treat uncertainties in the form of ambiguity and vagueness. Ambiguity refers to the type of uncertainty in which the selection of multiple options among a set of alternatives is plausible. Uncertainties in decision making problems are by reason of either randomness or fuzziness, or by both and can be classified into stochastic and non-stochastic uncertainty. Comprehensive concurrence of stochastic and non-stochastic uncertainty in real world problems concerned researchers to incorporate theory of probability with fuzzy logic theory. In recent years, technology has advanced at a rapid speed, increasing the complexity of systems and, as a result, the susceptibility of breakdowns. Due to this, the importance of reliability assessment has got new ground and has become an integral part for achieving high performance and life cycle cost of the product.

Area 4:- Demography, Bio-Statistics and Sample Survey

Members: Dr. Nitin K. Kamboj, Dr. Tribhuvan Singh, Dr. Rajni Goel

Sample surveys are a methodology that focuses on selecting a set of individuals capable of representing the target population. The basic idea behind the concept of sample surveys is to gather the information that will boost data collection while doing so within a specific time frame. With suitable sampling strategies, researchers can minimize variance. So, formulation of best estimator is needed to estimate population parameters and through software and mathematical computation, one can demonstrate it. This maximizes the effectiveness of research processes by making the end result and analysis actionable.

Area 5: Cosmology and Differential Geometry

Members: Dr. Shilpi Singhal, Dr. Pooja S. Saxena

Cosmology is the study of the Universe as a whole. As an empirical science, cosmology involves the theoretical modelling of the Universe and its contents, as well as testing model predictions against precise astronomical observations. Cosmology is a branch of astronomy that involves the origin and evolution of the universe, from the Big Bang to today and on into the future. It gives us a better understanding of how the universe works, how our galaxy and solar system were formed, and the potential fate of our Sun, planet, solar system, galaxy, and theories of how the universe will age or even end. Along with the study of the universe it also includes further developing and refining the prevailing model, the Big Bang theory, investigating the universe's rate of expansion.

Undergraduate students of Mathematics Department have several opportunities to participate in mathematical research and directed reading. Mathematics department helps to students in guiding the undergraduate and postgraduate levels in world-class research endeavours to complete their dissertation projects headed by our faculty members. The department of Mathematics offers many research topics like Mathematical modelling, Scientific Computing, Soft computing, Distributed System, Instability analysis in Fluids, Nonlinear Dynamics, Demography and Bio-Statistics, Reliability Theory and so on. As a researcher, you can work in a variety of areas, however you would typically be involved in proving deep and abstract theorems, developing mathematical descriptions (models) to explain or predict real phenomena and applying mathematical principles to identify trends in data sets. Some of the students also learn various software like MATHEMATICA, MATLAB, PYTHON, SPSS and R and do their projects using these softwares.
