    The Adviser: Dr Anshu Tomar

    A valedictorian of Ph.D from IIT, Roorkee; Creates, Improves, and Protect the environment in which we live in. An Expert in design and detailing of high rise buildings, has developed Retrofitting Strategy for Historical Masonry Buildings, also developed teaching aids on design of structures (special emphasis on seismic design) using STAAD PRO. Well versed in Indian seismic design codes, his teaching experience of 19 years is a narrative of proficiency and efficiency. Dr. Tomar has delivered lectures for SAARC countries and also Expert Pan India Live streaming Lectures. His Publications: Refereed International Conference Proceedings Reports, SCI Journal Papers. Keeping in mind that we live in an ever-changing world he has been a part of many Training/ Workshop/Conference. Affiliations to Life Member (LM) - Indian Society of Earthquake Technology (ISET) & Member (MIE) - The Institution of Engineers (India)

    Converting dreams into reality Dr. Tomar has designed at National & International- Shanghai Trade, Shanghai, China. His area of Interest are Seismic Evaluation and Retrofitting of Historical Masonry Structures, Performance-Based Design of Masonry Structures, Nonlinear Modeling and Analysis of Structures, Structural Engineering and Dynamics, Design of High Rise Buildings. Dr. Tomar sets realistic short & long term goals, as per him it helps to be on the same page as directed; a result he has Teaching Plan for the next 3 years.

  • About the Department

    Civil Engineering is a professional engineering discipline that deals with the design, construction and maintenance of the physical and naturally built environment, including works like roads, bridges, canals, dams, and buildings. Civil Engineering takes place on all levels: in the public sector from municipal through to national governments, and in the private sector from individual homeowners through to international companies.

  • A Civil Engineering degree prepares a professional to work in various engineering areas, from construction to communications, infrastructure etc. Civil Engineers are involved in the design, development and construction of a huge range of projects in the built and natural environment. Their role is central to ensuring the safe, timely and well-resourced completion of projects in many areas, including highway construction, waste management, coastal development and geotechnical engineering. Consulting Civil Engineers liaise with clients to plan, manage, design and supervise the construction of projects. As contracting Civil Engineers, they turn the plans of consulting Civil Engineers (designers) into reality. They oversee the actual construction on the ground and work in conjunction with consulting engineers.

  • Civil Engineering graduates are also valued in commercial and corporate sectors such as finance, banking and accountancy. A Civil Engineering degree would be of great value in operational management, supply chain management, procurement, intellectual property, logistics and after-sales management also.

    The Civil Engineering Department of the Institute was started in the year of 2009 offering Under Graduate course in Civil Engineering with an intake capacity of 60 students, which has now been increased to 120. An M. Tech. program in Structural Engineering is also being offered with a sanctioned intake of 18. The department has well qualified, experienced and dedicated faculty members and lab technicians. The Department has state-of-the-art laboratories and modern infrastructure.

  • A person with enough knowledge of understanding and designing RCC and Masonry buildings against seismic forces as a structural designer. A person with efficiency of solving any problem of structural behaviour using FEM based numerical modeling specially of heritage masonry nature. An academician able to transfer his knowledge to students by various means, theoretically as well as using softwares. An academician who has delivered LIVE lectures across the country for seismic knowledge distribution and has also been part of testing teams (during his stay at IIT Roorkee) outside India for countries to quantify and qualify their manmade and natural assets against seismic forces.

  • Laboratories

    The Department has 11 fully equipped state-of-the-art laboratories supervised by experienced faculty members. There are trained technicians to help the students in performing the experiments.

  • Fluid Mechanics Lab

    A basic knowledge of Fluid mechanics is essential for all the civil engineers as they frequently come across a variety of problems involving flow of fluids, force of fluid on structural surfaces etc. This laboratory is used for experimentation on the properties and behavior of fluids.

  • Hydraulics & Hydraulic Machines Lab

    The hydraulics laboratory is fully equipped with all the facilities and experimental setup through which students are given a very good demonstration to understand various methods of measurement of flow rates, capacity & velocity of water in tanks, closed pipes and open channels.

  • Building Material Lab

    The Building Material Lab is equipped with experimental setup required for study of properties of various building materials.

  • Soil Mechanics Lab

    The soil lab provides academic and research services through performing all lab tests needed for analysis and study of soil characteristics and its properties.

  • Transportation Lab

    Transportation lab consists of equipment used in the testing of bituminous materials such as viscosity, ductility and plasticity and other devices for super-pave testing of bitumen and aggregates. There are other devices for mix design by both Superpave and Marshall Methods.

  • Structure Analysis Lab

    The Structural Analysis Lab facilitates in the determination of the effects of loads on physical structures and their components. Results of the analysis are used to verify a structure’s fitness for use.

  • Environmental Lab

    The Environmental Lab comprises of modern and technically advanced instruments needed for water and wastewater analyses. The lab has also many in-situ devices and equipment to perform different types of measurements and to take grab and composite water, wastewater samples.

  • Geology Lab

    The Geology lab is used for experiments related to crystallography and mineralogy. State-of-the-art facilities are also available for experiments on structural geology.

  • CAD Lab

    The CAD Lab is equipped with AutoCAD software and is extensively used for design and drawing. The knowledge gained in the lab eventually equips the students to provide quality service once employed in the industry.

  • Survey Lab

    The survey lab is used for surveying exercises and is equipped with all latest instrumentation viz levels, total stations, and GPS receivers sets for conducting ground surveying works.

  • Building Planning and Drawing Lab

    Building planning and drawing lab in civil engineering is used for make the plan of any building, structure, etc. The various plan model of this lab are generally Study model of two story building, Study model of bifurcated stair, Study model of open well stair, Study model of flush door, Study model of racking shore, model of ventilated door, Study model of laced & bracing, Study model of shahs door, Study model of fully panel door, Study model of half panel & half glazed door etc.
