Two Days Hands-On Workshop on Geodesic Dome

The “Two Days Hands-On Workshop on Geodesic Dome” has been organised by Faculty of Architecture and Design (FoAD), DIT University for third year students (Batch 2017-22) on 18-19 October 2019. The two-resource person called for the workshop are Ar. Kanika Singh and Ar. Aman Katoch. Currently, Ar. Kanika Singh is the Principal Architect and Ar. Aman Katoch is the Joint-Principal Architect at DeStylio Architects, Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh (U.P.). Furthermore, Ar. Kanika Singh and Ar. Aman Katoch are also a visiting faculty at Sharda University, Greater Noida, U.P. and Sanskar College of Architecture, Ghaziabad, U.P. respectively. The faculties coordinating the workshop on behalf of FoAD are (i) Assoc. Prof. Sandeep Saxena, (ii) Asst. Prof. Meet Fatewar, and (iii) Asst. Prof. Sanan Verma.

A 3V Geodesic Dome has been constructed by the 3rd year students, which is comprises of 3 different size of triangles and is little more complex in its pattern as compared to the 1V and 2V domes. It is constructed from bamboo (2” diameter) and Mild Steel (MS) pipe (2” diameter & 14 gauge thick) by the students under the guidance two resource person and three faculties coordinators. The size of the dome is 17 feet in diameter and 7 feet in height. The struts are made-up of bamboo and MS pipe is used to make the connection between struts.

The whole dome is constructed and fabricated by the students only i.e. from marking and cutting of bamboo and MS pipe of required size; flatting of MS pipe (half of its length); drilling of holes in bamboo and MS pipe; joining of bamboo and MS pipe through nut and bolts along with the washer; marking the diameter of dome on the ground; and joining of all the struts one by one and making connections through nut and bolts along with the washer. The hands-on workshop has helped the students to understand the concept of geodesic dome; to deal with the unforeseen challenges during the in-house fabrication of dome; to work in a team; to implement the prescribed knowledge on ground; and to manage the time and available resources at the best.
