DIT University inaugurated its annual Sports’ Fest “Sphurti-2016”. The preparation for the event reached its peak since early morning. This annual festival had more than 40 teams present in the ceremony. The ceremony kicked off in a booming yet subtle way with garlanding the Goddess of Learning- Saraswati and a beautiful traditional Bharat Natyam dance.
The Chief Guest Shri R.S. Meena, IPS, Additional Director General of Police, Uttarakhand arrived at the inauguration ceremony. He was welcomed in a customary way by DIT University students. Prof. Dr. K.K. Raina, Vice-Chancellor DIT University welcomed all the dignitaries and spoke regarding the importance of sports in every person’s life. He also highlighted the necessity of being active through varied co curricular activities in daily life. Emphasizing on the value of sports at DIT University, utmost care is taken to ensure every student is involved in co curricular activities.
“Sphurti”- The annual sports property of DIT University ensures competition of skill, talent, agility and strength. He also mentioned that “Sphurti” will be taken to an international platform in coming years.
Shri Meena inspired the audience with his speech, taking the sitting professors a trip back in memory lane. He shared his experience to the noble profession stating how he was a lecturer himself. He ignited the hearts of present athletes by expressing the importance of sports and discipline in life. In 2001, he was designated as SSP, Dehradun since then he has been sharing a strong bond with DIT.
The athletes representing DIT University rallied the campus with “The Torch of Spirit” passing it onto the Chief Guest who then ignited the “Torch of Sphurti” which is the symbol of sportsmanship, spirit, energy and enthusiasm. Shri Meena read the scroll and released the tricolor balloons marking the fest officially open. All participating athletes from different colleges took oath to play the game fairly and vow to not use or consume any objectionable substance.
Students of DIT University performed group as well as solo dances with all zeal and enthusiasm. Thus concluding the ceremony Director- Academics Professor Shishir Kumar thanked all the participating colleges and athletes for making the inauguration ceremony a grand success. National Anthem was played, “Sphurti-2016” flag was unflured marking the end of ceremony. “Sphurti-2016” is a four day event to be held across various venues in Dehradun. The sports being played include cricket, football, volley-ball, basket-ball, table-tennis, badminton and many more. Pro Vice-Chancellor Professor S. Swaminathan in his sports attire threw the inaugural basket marking the starts of sports.
