Overview of Physics Department

To a physicist, the world consists of matter and energy. The study of physics encompasses the areas: force & motion, light, sound, electricity magnetism and structure of matter. Thus the basic science especially Physics plays an important role in building the foundation for all engineering fields. Further it is very essential for all the engineering students to have the knowledge of fundamentals of different aspects of physics, so as to apply them in various engineering fields e.g. semiconductor physics in microelectronics, optics in optical fibre communication, optical amplification and multiplication, magnetic properties in computer memories, lasers for various industrial applications, and the modern physics in nuclear power generation etc.

The Department of Physics at DIT University was established in the year 1998 to provide adequate support to all undergraduate programs in engineering and sciences. Engineering Physics I is being taught in the first year of B.Tech Program in all the branches and Engineering Physics II is being taught in B.Tech Petroleum II Year. Apart from these two courses Department of Physics also conducts elective courses in Photonics and Nanotechnology for B.Tech IV year, M.Tech and Ph.D. programs. In 2016 the Department of Physics is initiating a Masters program in Physics with specialization in Electronics. The department is also planning to start in near future an M.Tech program in Materials Science and Technology. These programs are being planned by looking at the growing demand of the need of research in basic science and in the field of Materials Science.

Department of Physics also has a Materials Research Laboratory for R & D activities in the advance areas of research. The major equipment available are Spin Coater, Muffle Furnace, Centrifuge, Hot plate with magnetic stirrer, Magnetic Tc measurement set up (drop method), Sonicator, LCR meter, Ball mill, Hydraulic press etc. This research laboratory will also enrich the quality of education being imparted to undergraduate students. The department hopes that by giving central importance to research activities it will improve the quality of teaching as well as translate the findings of the scientific and technological research into an impact which will make a difference to industry as such and the society as a whole.

  • Organization of a mini workshop “Popularizations of Science” on the occasion of National Science Day.
  • Establishment of advanced tools for the materials research for UG, PG and PhD scholars.

Overview of Chemistry Department

Department of Chemistry at DIT infuses a 18-year centre of excellence with a distinctly non-traditional approach to the undergraduate education.  In harmony with the overall objectives of the university, the primary objective of the Chemistry Department is to develop the desire, ability and ambition of students to apply the theoretical and technical knowledge for sustainable and analytical solutions to the problems of scientific and social interests. Department is also fulfilling the responsibility of developing outstanding intellectuals by imparting guidance and mentoring them.

The requirements of the department are supported by the good infrastructure including a well developed and spacious laboratory, covering an area of about 100 sq. meters and having the capacity to accommodate 30 students at a time. The laboratory is well equipped with several sophisticated instruments like VIS-spectrophotometer, Bomb calorimeter, Muffle furnace, pH meters, Distillation assembly etc.

The undergraduate students associated with the department are allotted two hours everyday for practical classes. It is mandatory for all the students to perform the experiments individually and to maintain a record of observation of different experiments. Internal evaluation system also includes viva-voce to check the conceptual knowledge gained for the related topics in lab.

Besides the experiments included in the curriculum of the undergraduate programmes, lab provides facilities for their project work assigned to the students in higher semesters and also some value added experiments especially designed for the students of Environmental Chemistry/Engineering.

Overview of Humanities & Social Sciences Department

The Department of Humanities & Social Sciences plays the distinctive role of integrating human attributes and values with a holistic science and technology education. It helps to make India’s bright young minds critical thinkers and ensures all round holistic development of students through teaching a variety of subjects, innovative curricula, and participation in co-curricular activities. The department offers subjects like Professional Communication, Engineering Economics, Principles of Management, Organizational Behavior, Human Values and Ethics. Further, in order to make the students campus ready, they are exposed to corporate communication and their technical writing skills developed with an emphasis on critical thinking, rhetorical analysis, effective writing and effective document design. Nationally renowned trainers impart training in subjects like Soft Skills Development, Aptitude Building and Personality Development to enable them to present themselves effectively and handle professional situations.

Foreign Languages

The Foreign Languages program is designed to provide students with a professional edge in today’s competitive environment. DITU has entered into an MoU with the Embassy of France for teaching French language. A French national teaches French to the students at the end of which globally recognized due certification is provided. A language certification course in German is also being run in the department.

Achievements of the Department

  • Ph.D program was started by the department.
  • The BOS meeting was held for finalizing the syllabi of all the Humanities subjects on 24th March, ’14. Prof. D.K.Nauriyal & Prof. Rashmi Gaur from IIT Roorkee, Prof. Sangeeta Sharma from BITS Pilani & Mr.Ravikant Rangaiah , former Vice President, Infogain were the external expert.
  • French classes were started by the department under an MoU with the French Embassy. Mr. Romain Devaux was deputed by the French Embassy to conduct the classes for a period of nine months.
  • Cambridge English classes were started by the department under a MoU with the Cambridge University in 2013.

Overview of Mathematics Department

Mathematical techniques are essential part of analytical and logical reasoning of all learnings. Therefore it is imperative for all professionals to have sound knowledge of Mathematics.
Department of Mathematics was established since the inception of Dehradun Institute of Technology (DIT) in 1998. It has been delivering courses on Engineering Mathematics and other courses required by various Engineering Departments. In the process many new courses were formulated looking into the needs. Today, we are a big Department equipped with highly qualified faculty members, doing basic research in the following areas:

Special Functions, Numerical Analysis, Modern Algebra, Algebraic Coding Theory, Thermal Instability in Incompressible Fluids, Commutative and Computational Algebra, Operation Research, Fluid Dynamics, Fractals and Simulation, Complex Analysis.

The Department started a Ph.D. programme in Mathematics in 2013 and a master’s course “M.Sc. (Mathematics and Computing)” in 2015. This year, our Board of Studies has approved another programme, “Integrated M.Tech. (Scientific Computing)”. We are planning to start this programme in July 2016. It will have entry level after +2 examination and is of five year duration. It will give a sound base in mathematics with advanced level computing as desired by various Industries.

Department organized a National level conference in Collaboration with BHU Mathematical Society funded by DST.
